Succulent Propagation

Welcome to my Succulent Zen Spot! I've been wanting to write this post for a long time but now I finally found a good way to show them to you on pic.

There are a lot of good info on succulent propagation on the internet, I learned my how to through google searches too. However, with all the info on the web, I feel it's lacking some informative photos to go with, especially when I started this process and didn't know all the gardening terms and plant names.

If you're a succulent hoarder like me, things could get quite expansive. All the plants look so cute in the store yet they take so so long to grow, you tend to keep purchasing more and more to fill up that garden area. I started to propagate not only to add new plants to my garden, but also help the existing plants to grow thicker and lush. Baby plants and cuttings does take some time to establish new roots and get comfy in their new environment. Here is my set up for home propagation "system", it really doesn't take much.

These are leaflets that either fell off from handling or I plugged them to kind of force the existing plant grow more buds. I throw them on a tray and let it root. This was my baking tray and I placed foil underneath, no reason for the foil, just something that helped to keep the tray clean in case I needed it later. Most medium fleshy leaves roots well without rooting hormone, some takes long to root by itself, so I do dip them in rooting hormone. You can purchase rooting hormone in any gardening store. I don't water them at this stage, watering could easily lead to rotting right now. We need to wait until the leaflets start to sprout before watering.  Keep them dry and warmer areas works better than colder ones. I have mine in front of window where they do get some bright lights but NO DIRECT SUN. See some of the leaflets rooted like crazy and started budding new plant, I then transfer these leaflets to another dish where there's some soil for it to drink some nutrient.

Here's another shot of the different leaflets at this tray. Some of the leaflets just roots and never sprout anything, I will wait and wait until the leaflet is completely shriveling then I throw it away. Some sprouts without rooting, and some does both very quickly. As long as the leaflet is not completely dead, there's always hope!

So once they root and sprout a bud of new plant, I transfer them here. I have succulent appropriate soil here and white sand on the top. You don't need the white sand, I used this tray for growing lithops before so I reused it after my lithops were a little bigger.

Here's another baby dish, this is soil only, works the same way. The roots will extend downward and outward, the budding new plant will be slightly bigger. I spray these once or twice a day depending on my mood. You might want to give them some plant food if you please, it does make them grow a little faster. Just follow direction according to what you purchased. You can see in these two photos, some of the leaflets starts to turn brown yellow, that means the leaflets are doing it's thing, providing nutrient for the new plant, and now the new plant has sucked up all that's left, when it's light and paper thin, you can detach these leaflets. You DO need to WAIT until it's COMPLETELY DRY, even if it's almost completely dry and you plug then out, you're risking pulling the roots away with the old leaflet leaving the new plant rootless.

Once the plant is freed from it's  old leaflet, I transfer them again to my little garden dish. They are absolutely not ready for the direct sun yet, even the morning sun could burn these little guys quick. I have these indoors by another window, it receives maybe 20 mins of afternoon sun during the summer. You may wish to plant these by their mother plants too, as long as it gives enough shade so it won't dry up.

Here are more of my baby plants. So cute aren't they?! I'm really running out of room of where to keep them.

Here's an overview of the process (they are all from the same type of plant, but it's a good shot for the purpose of showing it's progress). 1) brand new leaflet from mother plant. 2)leaflet starts to root. 3) sprouting new plant. 4) growing healthy and old leaflet starts to shrink. 5) old leaflet is completely dried up. 6) detach old leaflet from new plant.

Miss Allie C.

Beautiful Miss Teen California Allie Cummings is in my neighborhood! She lives so close to me that it would be such a lost to not ask her to conduct a photo shoot with me! Miss Allie was so nice and agreed right away. I see Allie quite often walking the dog, hanging out with her parents and other younger neighborhood kids; not only is she beautiful on the outside, but she's really down to earth and has this tranquil calmness that really surprised me.

Challenges I faced with this photo shoot was.... well.... height! I knew I will have this problem in this career, and I planned to wear a bit of heels during these types of photo shoot. Cleverly, I've also planned some close up shots and shots on the tree branches; and being at eye level with Miss Allie was tough!! Thank goodness Allie was completely calm and accommodating during the entire shoot, despite having to climb on tree trunks almost falling down, and waiting for me to adjust to higher grounds, the hero photos really turned out nice. I tinted the photos to look more vintage and nature driven. Hope you like them too! Don't forget to visit my portfolio!

Adventures of the Aitken Family

We've known the Aitken family because our daughters attend the same karate class. Both girls started karate class at around 3.5 years old. I'm pretty sure they were one of the youngest kids that got started, even if they weren't, they sure seemed so. The two little girls were short and tiny, but on the dojo mat, they threw harder punches and screamed louder than a lot of older kids, even boys.

Last month, I had the honor to see the Aitkens in action through my camera. Prior to this photo session, I spent some time with three energetic little boys and I thought they were one of my hardest challenges. Yet the Aitkens, especially the older daughter Peyton (the karate girl), completely surprised me! Don't let some of these sweet photos fool you, this house is constantly on the move. We took the girls to their secret hill top spot, and boy, I mean girls, miss Peyton was climbing up the tree like a little monkey; completely fearless and ready to take down the world. She climbed up the trees so high my mind was trembling trying to decide if I should take more adventurous photos or put down the camera to be ready to catch her. Miss independence climbed up a tall branch and stood up high, "I am Peyton the explorer, and I am going to take over the world!" she roared.

Madison, the younger sister, is just the most adorable little munchkin! Besides following her sister's crazy adventures, she spent a majoirtity of the time munching! As long as she has a snack in hand, she's happy! Both my kids didn't start enjoying food until almost the age of 2, seeing someone so fond of food makes me so happy too! Take a look at how my day with the Aitkens went, they are such a beautiful family. Don't forget to visit my portfolio!

Vindy Leung Photography

Vindy Leung Photography - is finally up and running! I'm just full of surprises right?! I know I'm all over the place. There's really no end to creativity! I love to try new things and be spontaneous. I've always loved photography. Had my 35mm during school and learned the basics of camera and film. My children gave me a good reason to strap it up again. After taking a few more technical classes on photography, I really feel I have a good grip of the equipments. Now with the support of my loving husband, I'm starting on a new endeavor being a family lifestyle photographer.

Take a look at my first client - Majorie and her three boys, Samuel, Gabrielle, and Francis! This busy family is always on the go, I am so happy to be able to capture the boys at play, running around and full of energy. I purchased these three baskets with three different sizes and had a shot in mind, never had I thought the basket would be too flimsy. When I finally helped the boys into the basket, one by one they kept falling over like Humpty Dumpty. Just as I thought what an awful idea it was, the boys completely surprised me. Gabrielle (in the middle) started to laugh uncontrollably, he looked to the left and saw his older brother fall, Gabrielle laughed harder; then he looked to his right and saw his baby brother fall too, he laughed even harder. Majorie picked up and repositioned the boys as they fell, and 10 seconds later, they are on the floor again. The expressions on their faces were priceless, it was hilarious!

Lithop Babies

Among the various succulents that I have, lithops are one of my very very favorite. These alien like little boogies are sooooo weird looking. Some looks like a little behind, some looks like an one eye monster, my conos looks like it has a pair of hot purple lips! But goodness, they grow soooo slow. I began to sow my mixed lithops seeds last late September and they are only the size of a pencil top (accounting the biggest ones). Here's a review of how they age:

Sprouted lithops babies sow from seeds (about 2 days old). My camera could hardly focus on them.

two weeks old, my camera can now focus
4 months old lithops babies started to split
6 months old, just the cutest!

Zen Spot, Succulents

I'm BACK!

It's been almost two years since my last post, with the two monsters and OiOi Me etsy shop, my life has been... slotting! Mind my English, here's MY explanation:

Slotting: functioning within slots of time.

Majority of my day has been spend to take care of this and that, not to mention those cross over moments when I'm busy making dinner and were suddenly interrupted by a "waaaa, Mommy, Logi hit me". Just as I'm about to focus my mind on an idea and it's always interrupted by something "wonderfully" annoying, so in the past few years, my life has been slotting.

However, I have found a zen place in between the everyday chaos: gardening, specifically succulents! I can go on and on and on about how wonderful these little plants has made me, they have been so soothing, and refreshing, and so so kind to me! I swear I have not had one succulent plant die on me and believe me when I say I am no green thumb. My love for succulents turned me into to succulent hoarder. My yard is filled with succulents, lithops and cactus. To justify my spending, I have sadly clip off my cute little plants and sold them away on my etsy shop. Thankfully they are doing pretty well in the shop and I've used the earnings to purchase more and more succulents (I know I'm an addict).

Here's my all time best seller, featured in many blogs, websites, and in a European magazine, the Zen wine cork succulent DIY kit.
